Deserts of India, Indian Deserts

The deserts of India are among the five physical division of the country. The deserts of India form a large part of the topography of the northwestern part of India. Covering mostly Rajasthan, known as Thar Desert and Great Indian Desert, the deserts cover encompasses parts of Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab. In addition, this vast desert also covers the Sindh and Punjab provinces of the country Pakistan.

Thar Desert
Thar Desert comprise three main parts namely, sand, hills and plain. Sand dunes are synonymous with the desert. Northern Desert Thorn Forest mainly forms the vegetation of the desert. Cluster of this plants scatter the desert throughout. Travelers can also spot various species of shrub, trees and herbs.

The Great Indian Desert
The total area covered by Desert India is 200,000 square kilometer. Cities like Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur of Rajasthan form a part of the Great Indian Desert. Considered as the desert circuit, these three cities provide an unforgettable experience for those who make a sojourn in this desert state. Travelers from four corners of the world and from different parts of the Indian subcontinent visit Thar Desert round the year.

Jaisalmer is the best city to explore the sand stretches, particularly to be a witness of the spectacular sunrise as well as sunset. Bikaner gives tourists the opportunity to explore Thar Desert and also lets them make a stay in mud huts and tenets. Lying on the tip of the desert, Jodhpur is replete with numerous historical palaces. This city is also famous for the Desert Kites Festival, held annually.   • Rann of Kutch
    Rann of Kutch forms a part of the Great Indian Desert; this brackish mud desert remains seasonally wet. Lying between Gulf of Kutch and River Indus of southern Pakistan, this mud desert covers 30,000 square kilometer. Rann of Kutch over the years has proved to be a great place the presence of wild life. Various species of birds are spotted every year in this saline desert.

  • Little Rann of Kutch
    Neighboring Rann of Kutch is the Little Rann of Kutch, which has earned a world-wide fame for housing the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary. Apart from the Indian Wild Ass, the sanctuary is home to the Desert Fox, Indian Wolf, Chinkara, Golden Jackal, Blackbuck and Nilgai.
