Considered as one of the most religiously diverse nations in the world, India is the birth place of four of the major religions of the world, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Known for its secularism India is a country that allows all forms of beliefs equal status before the law. A county known worldwide for its rich culture, India is a nation that lays great importance on religion. To add to its credit there are a number of spiritual and religious places in India that attract millions of people every year from various corners of the world.

List of Spiritual Places in India

  • North India

    Situated in the state of Kashmir, Amarnath is one of the most sacred Hindu religious places in India. Considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati the holy shrine is located at a height of 14,500 ft from sea level. The pilgrimage begins in the form of a Yatra which is held every year in the month of July – August. It is believed that an ice image of Lord Shiva gets formed during this time of the year. Thousands of devotees flock to this spiritual and religious place in India from all parts of the globe to witness this miracle.

    Believed to be one of the holiest places in India, Haridwar is situated in the state of Uttaranchal. Popularly known as the place where the Gods left behind their footprints Haridwar offers the five sacred bathing spots which are Gangadwara, Kankhal, Nila Parvata, Bilwa Theertha and Kusavarta. Famous for the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh Mela this ancient town draws devotees every year from different parts of the country for a holy dip.

  • East India

    Located in the state of Orissa Puri is the house of the Jagannatha Temple. Jagannath the other name for Lord Krishna is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in India Considered as one of the Dhamas (abode) of God this religious place in India dates back to the 12th century. Situated at a height of 200 ft from sea level this temple complex contains 120 holy shrines. The famous Rath Yatra also takes place in Puri every year which is witnessed by millions from all across the world.

  • West India

    Known to be the abode of Sri Sai Baba, Shirdi is a small town situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. An important pilgrimage center for believers of all religions this holy town is visited by hoards of devotees every year who come to pay homage to Sai Baba. Believed to be a personification of spiritual perfection and compassion Sai Baba spent 60 years of his life in this holy town.

    Dargah Ajmer
    Built over the tomb of Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chisty this Dargah is an ornament to the city of Ajmer. Renowned as one of the most sacred spiritual and religious places in India not only for Muslims but for people of all faiths this Dargah receives universal respect and devotion. A never failing source of moral strength and spiritual enlightenment the Khawaja Saheb showers his blessings on one and all.

  • South India

    Rameshwaram, one of the four important pilgrimage centers of the Hindus, is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Famous for the temple dedicated to Lord Rama, Rameshwaram is said to be the spot where Lord Rama descended and built a bridge across the Palk Straight to reach Sri Lanka to rescue Sita. A paradise of golden sand, this spiritual and religious place in India is considered to be the Varanasi of the South.
