The Prime Minister of India is regarded as the most powerful functionary of the Union of India. He is the chief of government and also the leader of the majority party in the parliament. He heads the Council of Ministers and the executive branch of the Indian Government.

The prime minister of India is also the head of the cabinet of ministers. He is vested with the powers of appointment and dismissal of other members of the cabinet.

The Prime Minister of India is appointed by the President. One of the major responsibilities of the Prime Minister is to assist the President in the administration affairs of the executive. The current prime minister of India is Manmohan Singh.
