Indian Ayurvedic Medicines

Coming from a Sanskrit word, ‘Ayur’ which means life and ‘Veda’ which means knowledge, Ayudrveda or alternative medicine is one of the most traditional forms of medicine found in the Indian subcontinent. In order to understand Indian ayurvedic medicine, it is important to have a fair knowledge about ayurveda.

Ayurveda basics
The whole healthcare system of Indian ayurvedic medicine mainly encompasses diet, detoxification, herbal usage, exercise and ways for improving both emotional and mental health. According to ayurveda, the human body is made of five major elements, namely, water, earth, air, fire and space and three humors, vata, kapha and pitta mainly form the functional characteristics of the body. In addition, the seven basic tissue of the human body are majja, rasa, mansa, rakta, meda, shukra and asthi. Indian ayurvedic medicines not only treat the ailment but the person as a whole, thereby preventing the need of any further treatment. Health & sickness
According to Ayurveda health and sickness depends upon the balance of the five major elements of the human body. If there is a slight disturbance between the equilibrium of any of the five basic elements then sickness occurs. A loss in the state of equilibrium could be due to the following reasons: undesirable habits, seasonal abnormalities, dietary indiscrimination and certain undesirable actions of the mind and body.

Types of Ayurvedic Treatments & Medicines

Shodhana therapy (Purification Treatment)
Shodhana focuses on removing the root cause of the disease. The treatment involves using a number of ayurvedic medicines by which the weeds are pulled out by its roots. Also known as purification process this treatment is one of the most important means of detoxification of toxins from the body by the means of sweat. Shodhana is achieved by using Emesis, Purgation, Oil Enema, Decoction enema and Nasal administration of medicines.

Shamana
This treatment involves suppression of the vital doshas. Shmana is the process by which disturbed humor subsides and returns to its normal state. The treatment is achieved by use of digestives, exercise, exposure to sun, breathing exercise and sedatives.

Nidan Parivarjan
This form of ayurvedic treatment involves avoiding of those factors that are the major causes of disease. It involves maintain a healthy lifestyle and refraining from disease aggravating factors.

Rasayana therapy
This form of treatment provides strength and vitality to the human body and mind. It helps to restore the balance between the body elements by preventing wear and tear of the body tissues. By resorting to this treatment one can rap the benefits of immunity against various diseases, prevention of ageing, glowing complexion and intelligence.

Satvavajaya
This area of ayurvedic treatment is concerned with the removal of mental stress. With years of research and study ayurveda has come up with a number of medicines that restrain the mind from desires. This treatment also promotes intelligence, concentration and cultivation of courage.
