Father's Day in India

There are certain days in a year that are reserved in the calendar as a special day. It is a reason that makes the day special. The reasons often vary. There are political reasons and then there are religious reasons. Most of these are handed to us by events that have preceded or followed by faith. However there are some reasons that are made by the modern man.

Father’s day – The reason behind the celebration of Father’s Day is to honor all fathers and celebrate their fatherhood. The date for this falls on the third Sunday of the month of June every year.

History of Father’s Day celebrations – It had first occurred to Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington, USA on a Sunday in 1909. As she sat listening to a discourse at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church at Spokane on that Sunday about Mother’s Day she thought of a similar day for fathers would be complimentary. She first arranged a tribute to her father on the 19th of June, 1910 and expressed the desire for a day that would be an official observance of a ‘Father’s Day’.

Father’s Day Celebrations – It took many years for the day to be observed officially. It had the support of the YMCA and the YWCA but did not meet with serious support. On the contrary it attracted a lot of satirical humor. However President Coolidge supported the idea in 1924. In 1930 the same was legitimized to be a holiday by trade groups.

Significance of Father’s day celebrations - There are several reasons that could be significant behind the celebration of a ‘Father’s Day.’ There is no doubt about the invaluable contributions that are made by the father in the life of his children as well as in establishing them in life. But it may not be too often that this contribution is recognized and acknowledged. Father’s Day gives all children with as readymade opportunity to celebrate and make their father feel special about being a father.

This is a relatively new concept of celebration in India. However it has caught up extremely well with the younger Indian generations especially over the last ten years. There are several options that are available for children of all ages to express their love and gratitude towards their fathers. Modern times in India present children with an array of products and services whereby they can surprise their fathers. But surprisingly enough it is not just little children who are informed about Father’s Day celebrations. The popularity of the occasion even reminds older and established children to remember their fathers on this day.
