These stories pertain to different places around the world. Whereas in ancient Greece, it can be traced back to the spring celebration in honor of Rhea, the Mother of Gods, in England it was celebrated to honor Mary, mother of Christ. The celebration however came to a close, after a short span of time.
It sprang again when social activist Julia Ward Howe initiated the idea of a ‘Mother’s Day for Peace’, to honor motherhood and womanhood. She however, could not succeed in establishing and promoting the celebration. Howe’s idea was influenced by Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, a young homemaker. It was Jarvis daughter, Anna Jarvis who eventually succeeded in introducing Mother’s day in the form, we celebrate it today. Her mother’s death on May 9, 1905 distressed her so much that she started a campaign to establish a Mother’s day. Her effort bore fruitful result and the first Mother’s day was celebrated on May 10, 1908, honoring the late Mrs. Reese Jarvis. This set the stage and in course of time the celebration gained immense popularity all over the world.
